Coming to the United States as a Student?
If you are coming to the UnitedStates for academic studies there are two options:
- The F-1 category is for students in colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools and other specialized schools.
- The M-1 category is for vocational students. Contact the Immigration Department for more information and special forms.
When you begin to apply, be sure you have proof of financial capability to attend school in the United States and includes your cost for housing and personal expenses. You may bring your wife and/or children with you if you are applying for entrace with the F-1; just be sure you take them with you to the embassy to get their forms processed and bring proof of relationship between you and them.
You can stay in the United States as long as you are registered or enrolled as a full-time student, but remember at any time if your status changes - it also impacts your family.
You might be able to work on-campus or off-campus under certain circumstances. Check on necessary work permits. You are the only one who may be allowed to work - your wife or children cannot.
If you are already working with a school for admittance, they have someone in the administration department that can assist you with this process. Just be sure to ask as soon as possible so you can be placed in touch with the person who has the forms and the knowledge.
